Spectroscopy and Bioinformatics Workshop

Student-Led Team Project

I helped develop and lead an interactive workshop to introduce participants to spectroscopy and bioinformatics, two foundational tools in bioengineering. In the first module, attendees assembled their own visible-light (VIS) spectrometers, using their personal smartphones as detectors. Following a guided walkthrough in MATLAB, they learned to calibrate their DIY instruments and process raw images into scientific spectra using biological pigments like chlorophyll. The second module introduced bioinformatics, where participants used computational tools to design a genetically engineered bacterium with an enzyme to promote nutrient recycling for crops. The workshop successfully provided a hands-on experience that integrated hardware assembly, data analysis, and computational biology.
